Gas Pump Skimmer, Avon Park (2017/07/06)

CREDIT CARD SKIMMER FOUND ON AP GAS PUMP

A credit card skimmer was found today (July 6) on a gas pump at El Paso Tiende Mexicana in Avon Park (across from Pizza Hut.)

If you have information on who is responsible for this, call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477)

This has been a big problem in Polk County lately, and things have a way of filtering down to our neck of the woods. Be sure to check the tamper tape on the pump before you fill up. It is also a good idea to use the pumps closest to the building, since those can be seen from inside and are less likely to be tampered with by thieves.

Pay with your credit card instead of debit, since you have better fraud protection on your credit card. The safest method is to pay inside. Even yanking on the credit card reader on the pump isn't a foolproof method, since many skimmers are placed inside the pump housing.

Detectives frequently check pumps in the county for skimmers, but you folks have a lot more eyes than we do, so help us monitor the pumps. If you see a pump that looks like it has been tampered with, call us at 863-402-7200.No automatic alt text available.

Burglaries, Highlands County (2017/07/05)

Highlands County Sheriff’s Office detectives are working to solve a string of vehicle burglaries that have occurred over the past few weeks.

So far, more than 30 cases have been reported, starting in the northern region of the county and slowly working south. Anywhere between 5 and 10 cars are being hit at a time, and many of the cars have had windows broken out in the process. The latest burglaries were in the Sebring Hills area and on Lakeview Drive on the night of July 4-5.The best defense against this type of crime is to make sure no valuables are visible in your vehicle. Take your purse, computer, phone and especially firearms inside with you at night. You could also lock them in the trunk, but at the very least make sure they can’t be seen through the window. If they can’t see anything worth stealing, there is a good chance the thieves will pass you by.

It goes without saying that you should make sure your car doors are locked, too.

Detectives are asking residents all over the county to be on the lookout for anything suspicious in their neighborhood late at night. If you see something, call Central Dispatch and let us know so a deputy can be sent to the area to check it out.

If you have already heard about some of your neighbors being victimized and have a security camera that can see the street, check out your footage. Maybe you got a glimpse of somebody walking down the street in the middle of the night. You never know if your camera has an image that could provide a valuable clue.

If you have any information, please email detectives@highlandssheriff.org, call 863-402-7250 or leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-226-TIPS or www.heartlandcrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers tips are eligible for a cash reward.

Robbery, Old Dixie Hwy, Lakeland (2017/06/29)

A 24-year-old man who has been twice arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for soliciting prostitution, was robbed at gunpoint last night after meeting a woman he didn’t know on an on-line social media ap. He began communicating on the social media ap “MeetMe” with a woman using the name “Annaliese.” He agreed to meet at a location she suggested near Auburndale. When he showed up at mobile home for sale on Old Dixie Highway near Auburndale, Florida at around 10:00 p.m., a woman was standing near a chain link fence at the entrance of the property. The woman is described as a heavy set Hispanic female in her mid to late 20s with dark hair and wearing blue pajama pants and a white tank top. The robbery victim later told deputies that the woman did not match the picture of “Annaliese” on the MeetMe Ap. She entered the victim’s pick-up truck and she told him to continue driving down the dirt driveway towards the house. She told the victim to park approximately 100 feet away from the trailer. They exited his pick-up truck and an unknown black or Hispanic man (average build, late 20s-early 30s, black hooded sweatshirt) approached the victim from behind and forced him to the ground. Then, according to the victim, the suspect placed a handgun against the back of his head and demanded his personal property. The suspect stole the man’s cellular phone, wallet, and vehicle keys. The suspect then told the victim to get up & walk away. The two suspects ran away towards Old Dixie Highway (they did not steal the truck). The victim ran to a residence nearby where a neighbor called 9-1-1. His wallet—with the cash removed—was later found by deputies in the bed of the truck and the keys were found on the ground behind the truck.

Shoplifting, Family Dollar, Wahneta (2017/06/29)

Do you know these three thieves? This trio traipsed into the Family Dollar store on 3rd Street in Wahneta on June 20th, took some things (white shirt, yoga pants, cap gun & cap gun rings), then took off in a Toyota Corolla.

Actually, no - the guy with the dreadlocks saw the store manager confront his friends in the car, so he walked the other way & hid the stuff he stole behind a bush, then fled on foot. His friends left in the car.

It`s not the crime of the century, but being the trained investigators we are, we know that people who shoplift aren`t exactly rule-followers, and tend to commit other crimes as well. And, nobody likes a thief.
