Skimmers on Gas Pumps, Highlands County (2017/08/04)

Skimmers found on gas pumps around Highlands County.

Skimmers being discovered in gas pumps around county

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office and the Sebring and Lake Placid police departments are currently investigating several skimmers that have been discovered inside gas pumps around the county.

Three of them were discovered Thursday, Aug. 3, in Avon Park. One was at the Citgo station at U.S. 27 and Allamanda Boulevard north of town and two were found at the Citgo on U.S. 27 and Morrill Street, across from Big Lots.

In addition, skimmers have been found at the following locations:

? June 17 at the Citgo at 1070 U.S. 27 South (Lake June Road)
? July 6 at the Citgo at 209 U.S. 27 N. in Avon Park (El Paso Tienda)
? July 17 at the Gate station, 134 U.S. 27 N. in Lake Placid (Dal Hall Boulevard)
? July 31 at Marathon, 2912 U.S. 27 N. in Sebring (across from Fairmount Cinema Square)

These skimmers are installed inside the pump rather than on the actual card reader, making them harder to discover. Once they are installed, criminals can simply pull back up to the pump and download the data, sometimes even via Bluetooth.

“Before you pump any gas, you should always look at the security seal on the pump. If the pump has been tampered with, the seal should say ‘opened’ or ‘void’ or give some other indication,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said.

In many of these cases, the skimmers have been discovered after customers have reported that the pump is not working correctly. Customers are encouraged to pay attention when they are at the pump and let the employees know if the pump seems to be acting up, particularly if the keypad seems to be malfunctioning or if the pump is slow to respond.

The best way to avoid being skimmed is to pay with cash or use your card inside. If you pay at the pump, use a credit card rather than a debit card because you can avoid having your bank account emptied.

Anyone who has information about any of these cases is asked to call law enforcement. Anonymous tips can be left through Heartland Crimestoppers at www.heartlandcrimestoppers.com or 1-800-226-TIPS. Crime Stoppers tips are eligible for a cash reward.

The skimmer at the Marathon station in Sebring has Bluetooth capabilities.

The suspect in the skimmer left at the Gate station in Lake Placid drove this silver SUV with Illinois plates.

Theft, Applebee's, Davenport (2017/08/03)

This suspect stole $850 worth of merchandise from a car parked at the Applebee's restaurant located at 200 Ambersweet Way in Davenport.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, the victims were inside eating. This female suspect went outside to smoke a cigarette. She had a small boy, between 7 and 10 years of age, with her.

While they were outside (and she appeared to be using the child as a lookout, real nice), she opened the victim's unlocked car, a 2017 Chrysler 300, which was a rental car (the victims were visiting from out of town). She removed $850 worth of recently purchased merchandise, including clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs, and placed them in her own car, a black Dodge SUV or van, which was parked next to the victim's car.

The woman appears to have blonde hair. After stealing the items, she and the little boy went back inside, got a to-go box of their food, and left.

If anyone has information about this theft or recognizes this suspect, they are urged to contact Detective Staton at 863-236-3928.
